  An Introduction to Parrot Island

Our Business Philosophy

At Parrot Island, our primary concern is for the well being of your bird. When we opened back in September of 1988 we were a small neighborhood store, affiliated with Kenwood Veterinary Clinic. Our business philosophy was to create a shop that would offer the best knowledge and service available for the pets and products we recommend. We hoped to build a clientele primarily through the referral of veterinarians and satisfied customers. We have always felt that working with birds places a responsibility on us to do the best job we can and to encourage the same in our customers. Our intent has never been to project a "holier than though" attitude, only to provide our customers with the most updated knowledge and benefit of our experience. We have never tried to be a high volume sales store, but to do the best job we know how. There is no more satisfying part of our job than knowing that we have given someone advice and information that allowed them to better understand and care for their pet.

We recognize that our knowledge of these beautiful intelligent creatures will continue growing and changing. Each year we are learning more about their habits in the wild and what is necessary to keep them healthy and happy in captivity. At Parrot Island we do our best to provide you with the most up to date information available.

It is our goal to match people with the type and personality of parrot that is best suited to them. One recent study revealed that 95% of all birds in this country are given up within the first two years. This is not a statistic that we would like to add to. We sell a few babies each year to people who are well educated in the responsibilities of their care. We also support a local avian adoption service and recommend that alternative to many of the people referred to us. Although we do believe that raising limited numbers of healthy, well socialized baby parrots is a good thing - we also believe that the placing of as many of the adoption birds into good homes as possible to be very important. We also actively work with several adoption agencies to place birds in need of a new home or recommend breeders that in our opinion do an excellent job.

Although we need to make money to stay in business, our main concern will continue to be the well being of the birds and for the customers who patronize our store. The core of our customer base is referrals from avian veterinarians and existing customers. We will continue to provide a quality alternative to the high volume sales over substance stores (and many times sales over the well being of the animal) that are unfortunately so common in the pet industry.

We Appreciate It!

As we enter our 15th year of being in business it seemed like a good time to let you, our customers, know how much we appreciate your business.

It is plain to us that the movement in many of today's businesses is away from individualized customer service and towards self-service. Although that business philosophy may have its place in some businesses we think that a business that deals with living creatures is not one of them. There have been many examples in the past of high-volume sales philosophies leading to the abuse of animals. Those businesses had portrayed themselves as having only the well being of the animal at heart. Some of the most notable were the puppy and kitten mills that the TV news program pictures so graphically depicted as the truly horrible things that they were. We receive regular mailers and phone calls from businesses that do these same (and sometimes even worse) things to birds. One such business actually states in their mailer - "Our animals are guaranteed to have all of their parts".

We hope wholeheartedly that you realize how much we appreciate your business and that we will continue to do what we can to deserve your patronage in the future. You should be proud of yourselves for choosing not to give your money to businesses that profit from the ill treatment of animals.
